Do you want to be part of an expanding retail landscape at Castle Howard? Are you looking for a new challenge? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our team in our unique and historic setting as Farm Shop Manager.

We are proud to sell great quality food and drink and have an experienced team of butchers, counter assistants, and retail advisors, preparing and serving great quality local produce for both our Farm Shop customers and our own Kitchens.

As the Farm Shop Manager, you will lead by example with a hands-on presence in the departments, delivering great product, presentation, and hospitality. You will build relationships with local suppliers and customers, ensuring interactions are memorable and expert advice is offered.

We are looking for someone who can build on our existing offer and lead our Farm Shop to excellence, continuously improving the business with creative contributions, new ideas and methods to create a truly unique offer that sets us apart.

Key Deliverables

Product & Service

  • Be responsible in delivering the Retail Strategy at the Castle Howard Farm Shop, liaising with other department Heads as appropriate.
  • To champion high quality, hospitality style customer service throughout the Farm Shop.
  • Work with the Head of Retail to source and purchase fresh food products to ensure that our produce, delicatessen and butchery departments reflect the Castle Howard brand and experience.
  • Work with the Head of Retail to determine seasonal themes and product lines through investigating and analysing market trends.
  • Plan with the Farm shop Supervisor the display and presentation of merchandise with consideration to established marketing plan and for effective support of sales; change displays regularly with a consideration to the buying audience and season.
  • Maintain a high quality and distinctive retail offer which is consistent with the Castle Howard brand and an exceptional level of presentation in all retail outlets.
  • Maintain an awareness of market trends in food & beverage retail together with visitor attraction retail and monitor local competitors.

Daily Operation

  • To ensure all retail stock processes are adhered to minimise waste and stockloss.
  • Be responsible for delivering and maintaining the Farm Shop food safety system.
  • Ensure all operations conform to health and safety requirements, regularly review health and safety process within retail operations.
  • Develop appropriate risk assessments and to operate in accordance with Castle Howard H&S policy at all times.
  • Hold regular H&S meetings with retail teams to ensure a culture of good H&S practice.
  • To participate in opening/closing procedures of the store
  • Undertake duty management shifts as determined by the weekly rota.

Financial

  • Achieve business plan goals and objectives for the Farm Shop.
  • To manage fresh food retail orders to ensure minimum waste with full availability.
  • To engage the team in the weekly targets and deliver agreed SPH targets and beat retail budget sales.
  • To monitor the retail rota and track sales vs labour spend effectively to deliver targeted wage costs.
  • Make recommendations for range improvements, increasing average transaction value and maximising profit contribution.
  • Use purchasing and stock data to review sales performance and profit contribution by category and make recommendations.
  • Responsible for the organisation and control of retail stock and stocktaking ensuring midyear and full year stock takes are undertaken in a timely manner.
  • Reduce & control wastage on perishable items in retail food areas.

People

  • To act as a role model to your team.
  • To create & maintain teams who are engaged and knowledgeable about the Farm Shop offer and champion this through their service.
  • To develop, train and coach your team through appraisal and ‘learning & development’
  • To ensure staff appearance is in line with company uniform standards,
  • Oversee management of rotas across the Farm Shop and Gift Shop, attendance management & holiday management ensuring continuity of staff cover across all retail outlets.
  • To complete all People admin and processes for the team in a timely manner.
  • Ensure staff are briefed on new ranges and receive product knowledge training as appropriate.
  • Ensure all company policies are adhered to by yourself and your team.

Experience:

  • Retail Management: 1 year (preferred)
  • Butchery: 1 year (preferred)
